Frequently asked questions

What does AI Label Tool do?
It draws the official EU AI icon onto your image and embeds an IPTC Digital Source Type value in the image's XMP metadata, so the file itself says it's AI-generated or AI-modified.
Does this make my image compliant with the EU AI Act?
No. It helps you add the labeling Article 50 requires, but it isn't a legal compliance guarantee. Whether a given image needs labeling, and whether your labeling is correct and sufficient, is your responsibility - see our EU AI Act guide and talk to a lawyer if you're unsure.
Is this the same as C2PA or Content Credentials?
No. C2PA/Content Credentials use cryptographically signed provenance data. This tool embeds plain, unsigned XMP metadata (IPTC's Digital Source Type) and a visible icon - simpler, but not tamper-evident, and it can be stripped by re-saving the file, re-uploading it to most platforms, or taking a screenshot.
What's the difference between "AI-generated" and "AI-modified"?
AI-generated is for an image created entirely by AI (DigitalSourceType trainedAlgorithmicMedia). AI-modified is for a real photo that was altered with an AI tool, e.g. inpainting or generative fill (DigitalSourceType compositeWithTrainedAlgorithmicMedia).
Which file formats support the metadata?
PNG and JPEG get the real XMP metadata embedded, byte for byte. WebP does not - its RIFF chunk layout isn't implemented, so a WebP download only gets the visible icon, not the metadata. Export as PNG or JPEG if you need both.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything - drawing the icon and embedding the metadata - runs in your browser using the Canvas and File APIs. The image never leaves your device.
How do I check the metadata actually got embedded?
Open the downloaded file with a metadata tool such as exiftool (exiftool -XMP:DigitalSourceType yourfile.jpg) or any XMP-aware viewer - our EU AI Act guide walks through this.
Is it free to use?
Yes, with no account required.
